How does Topstep work? Combine, funded sim account and live account
Topstep is a futures prop firm headquartered in Chicago, USA. Its predecessor company was founded in 2010. The program has 3 stages.
- 1. Trading Combine (evaluation, sim account)
This is the Topstep evaluation. On a 50K account, you pass when you reach the $3,000 profit target without touching the $2,000 maximum drawdown and trade at least 2 days. It is a monthly subscription, so you can take as many months as you need. The subscription for that Combine stops automatically when you pass.
- 2. Express Funded Account (funded sim account)
You activate this account from the dashboard after you pass. It is still a sim account, but you can withdraw the profits you make here, and the trader share is 90%. You can hold up to 5 at the same time. There is no profit target. You keep trading while following the maximum drawdown and payout rules.
- 3. Live Funded Account (live account)
The Topstep risk team invites traders after reviewing consistency, risk management, payout history and other factors. You cannot apply for this stage yourself. When you move up, all of your funded sim accounts are closed, and you can hold only 1 live account at a time.
You first take the evaluation (Trading Combine) in a sim account. After you pass, you trade in a funded sim account (Express Funded Account, XFA) and request payouts of your profits. The next stage, the Live Funded Account, is open only to traders invited by the Topstep risk team. With Topstep you pay the monthly evaluation fee, the activation fee, trading commissions and similar costs, and profit and loss in the evaluation and the funded sim account are calculated inside sim accounts. In exchange, breaking any single rule costs you the account. A futures prop firm evaluates traders on exchange-listed futures (ES, NQ, crude oil, gold and others on exchanges such as CME) rather than CFDs, and Topstep is one of these firms. Topstep evaluation and funded sim trading is simulated, and only the invitation-only Live Funded Account trades real capital.

Pricing
How much does Topstep cost? Standard from $49 a month, or No Activation Fee with a $0 activation fee
For each Topstep account size, you choose 1 of 2 payment paths. Standard keeps the monthly fee low and charges a $149 activation fee when you pass. No Activation Fee has a higher monthly fee but no activation fee when you pass. The passing rules, such as the profit target and maximum drawdown, are the same on both paths. You cannot change the path after purchase, so estimate how many months you will need to pass before you choose. All prices exclude tax, and local VAT or similar taxes may be added at checkout.
| Account and path | Monthly fee | Activation fee when you pass | 1 reset | Profit target | Max drawdown | |

| 50K Standard | $49/mo | $149 | $49 | $3,000 | $2,000 | See 50K on the official site |
| 50K No Activation Fee | $95/mo | $0 | $95 | $3,000 | $2,000 | See 50K on the official site |
| 100K Standard | $99/mo | $149 | $99 | $6,000 | $3,000 | See 100K on the official site |

- You cannot change the path (Standard or No Activation Fee) after purchase. If you bought the wrong size, you may be eligible for a refund after review if it is within 28 days of purchase and you have not traded.
- The evaluation renews automatically every 30 days. It continues until you pass or cancel, and there is no time limit to pass. You cannot pause it, and cancellation cannot be undone (you cannot resume the same Combine).
Show 6 more notes
- When you pass, the subscription for that Combine is canceled automatically. There is no refund or proration for the current month.
- A reset restarts the evaluation and costs the same as the monthly fee. You can reset up to 2 times per calendar day per account. A reset moves your next billing date 30 days later. Even after you hit the maximum drawdown, you get 1 reset credit at each renewal (credits issued on or after 2025-12-11 expire 1 year after issue).
- On No Activation Fee, adding a daily loss limit (DLL) at purchase lowers the monthly fee by $10 on 50K, $20 on 100K and $30 on 150K (applied every month).
- Back2Funded is a paid option that reactivates a funded sim account lost to a rule violation before the first payout, with the same size and payout rules. It costs $599 for 50K, $699 for 100K and $829 for 150K, and it is non-refundable. You can use it within 30 calendar days of the closure, up to 2 times per account.
- Refunds are generally not available. The 3 exceptions are: up to 1 monthly fee within 14 calendar days of your first Combine purchase if you have not passed (first time only); a renewal you forgot to cancel, if you have not traded, it is within 28 days of the charge, and that reset credit is unused; and buying the wrong size. Resets, activation fees, Back2Funded and Level 2 data fees are not refunded. Refunds go back to the original payment method in 7 to 10 business days.
- Accepted payment methods are Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Google Wallet and Apple Pay, and the card must be in your own name. PayPal is not accepted, and prepaid or gift cards may not work.
Total cost by months to pass: comparing the 2 Topstep payment paths
This is the cost to pass and activate a funded sim account, calculated as monthly fee x months to pass + activation fee. For example, on a 50K account, No Activation Fee is cheaper if you expect to pass within 3 months, and Standard is cheaper if it takes 4 months or more. On 100K the 2 paths are almost equal at exactly 3 months (a $1 difference), and on 150K they are almost equal at 5 months.
| Account and path | Pass in 1 month | Pass in 2 months | Pass in 3 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50K Standard | $198 | $247 | $296 |
| 50K No Activation Fee | $95 | $190 | $285 |
| 100K Standard | $248 | $347 | $446 |
| 100K No Activation Fee | $149 | $298 | $447 |
| 150K Standard | $348 | $547 | $746 |
| 150K No Activation Fee | $229 | $458 | $687 |
- Estimates based on official list prices. Tax, resets, data fees such as Level 2, trading commissions and discounts are not included. Any reset you buy along the way adds to the total.

What are the Topstep Trading Combine rules? 50K: $3,000 target, $2,000 max drawdown
The numbers you must follow in the Topstep Trading Combine are set by account size. On a 50K account, you pass when you reach the $3,000 profit target before your losses hit the $2,000 maximum drawdown (Maximum Loss Limit, MLL). You need at least 2 trading days, so you cannot pass in a single day. There is also a consistency rule: if your best day exceeds 55% of total profit, the profit target rises automatically. There are not many numbers, but the trading hours and position limits are detailed, so check the table and the notes together.
| Item | 50K | 100K | 150K |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profit target | $3,000 | $6,000 | $9,000 |
| Max drawdown (MLL) | $2,000 | $3,000 | $4,500 |
| Max position mini / micro | 5 / 50 | 10 / 100 | 15 / 150 |
| Daily loss limit (optional, set at purchase) | $1,000 | $2,000 | $3,000 |
| Consistency target | 55% | 55% | 55% |
| Best day guideline | Under $1,650 | Under $3,300 | Under $4,950 |
| Min trading days | 2 days | 2 days | 2 days |
- Trading hours: the week opens Sunday at 5:00 PM CT. On weekdays you must close all positions by 3:10 PM CT, and trading reopens at 5:00 PM CT. After 3:08 PM CT, Topstep risk management starts closing positions. You cannot hold positions overnight or over the weekend.
- Economic data: for 5 minutes before and 5 minutes after CPI, the FOMC statement and press conference, NFP (jobs report) and PPI (10 minutes in total), you cannot open new equity index or metals mini positions in sim accounts. Micros are limited to 3 contracts on 50K, 6 on 100K and 9 on 150K. You can hold and manage existing positions. Energy, interest rates, FX and other products are not affected.
Show 5 more notes
- Limits on volatile products: crude oil (CL, QM, RB, HO) and gold (GC) are limited to 3 contracts on 50K, 6 on 100K and 9 on 150K, and MCL and MGC to 30, 60 and 90. SI, HG and PL are currently set to 0.
- Consistency: if best day profit / total profit exceeds 55%, the profit target rises to best day / 0.55. There is no rounding or buffer. Your best day is set at 3:10 PM CT and is not reset by losing days.
- The daily loss limit (DLL) is optional in the evaluation and the funded sim account. If you add it at purchase, you cannot change it later, and it carries over to the funded sim account. Hitting the DLL is not a rule violation. Trading simply stops for the day, and you can resume at the next session at 5:00 PM CT.
- Profit made in the evaluation does not carry over to the funded sim account. You can hold any number of evaluation accounts at the same time, with 1 profile per person.
- Tradable products: CME equity indexes (ES, MES, NQ, MNQ, RTY, M2K, NKD and others), CME FX futures (6E, 6J and others), NYMEX energy, CBOT grains and interest rates, COMEX metals and more. Spot FX is not available.

The rule to watch most closely at Topstep is how the maximum drawdown moves.
Topstep Rules: Maximum Loss Limit, 55% Consistency Rule and Prohibited Conduct by Account SizeDrawdown
How does the Topstep maximum drawdown work? It rises with end-of-day balances and locks at the starting balance
The Topstep maximum drawdown (MLL) is monitored in real time, including intraday open profit and loss. The MLL line itself rises only with your balance at the end of each trading day (end-of-day basis). It never moves down, and it locks once it reaches the starting balance. Here is how it moves on a 50K account.
- Balance
- Loss floor (end of day)
- Locks at $50,000
Topstep max drawdown by account size
| Item | 50K | 100K | 150K |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max drawdown (MLL) | $2,000 | $3,000 | $4,500 |
| Evaluation profit target | $3,000 | $6,000 | $9,000 |
| Where the MLL locks in the evaluation | Starting balance | Starting balance | Starting balance |
| MLL at XFA start | -$2,000 | -$3,000 | -$4,500 |
| Where the MLL locks in the XFA | $0 | $0 | $0 |
- A 50K account starts with a $50,000 balance, and the MLL line starts at $48,000. If your balance touches this line even once, you lose eligibility to pass the evaluation.
- If you end day 1 with a balance of $50,500, the line rises $500 to $48,500. Even if your balance reached $51,000 during the day, the line is $48,500 when the close is $50,500.
Show 5 more notes
- The line does not move down on losing days. If day 2 ends at $49,800, the line stays at $48,500, and your remaining room shrinks to $1,300.
- When your end-of-day balance reaches $52,000, the line reaches the $50,000 starting balance and locks there. After that, the line does not rise no matter how much more profit you make.
- Open losses during the day are also monitored, so even if you expect to recover by the close, it is over the moment you touch the line while trading. Placing your stop orders inside the line helps protect you.
- In the funded sim account, the starting balance is shown as $0. The 50K line starts at -$2,000, rises the same way and locks at $0. After you receive your first payout, the line locks at $0.
- Topstep states officially that there are no MLL adjustments or exceptions of any kind.

Payouts
How do Topstep payouts work? 90% profit split and 1 to 3 business days for approval
At Topstep, you request payouts from the funded sim account (XFA) after you pass. There are 2 XFA types with different payout rules, Standard and Consistency, and both pay the trader 90% of profits. You submit requests from the dashboard during CME trading hours (Sunday 5:00 PM CT to Friday 5:00 PM CT, excluding holidays), and internal approval takes 1 to 3 business days. The minimum payout is $125. If you receive funds outside the US, international wire (Wire/SWIFT) is the main option, so plan for 5 to 10 business days and a $30 fee.
| Item | XFA Standard | XFA Consistency |
|---|---|---|
| Payout requirement | 5 winning days of $150 or more (not necessarily in a row). From the second payout, net profit since the last payout must be positive | 3 trading days (at least 1 trade each day) and consistency of 40% or less |
| Max per payout 50K | $2,000 | $3,000 |
| Max per payout 100K | $3,000 | $4,000 |
| Max per payout 150K | $5,000 | $6,000 |
| Balance-based cap | 50% of balance | 50% of balance |
| Profit split | 90% | 90% |
| Minimum payout | $125 | $125 |

- Days 8 to 10Request and reviewInternal approval takes 1 to 3 business days
- Days 11 to 13Funds arriveACH takes 1 to 3 business days, $30 fee
Payout methods and fees
| Payout method | Who can use it | Time | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wire/SWIFT (international wire) | International | 5 to 10 business days | $30 |
| Wise | China, Canada and the UK only (resumed in these 3 regions in August 2026) | 1 to 3 business days | No Topstep fee |
| ACH | US banks only | 1 to 3 business days | $30 |
| Aeropay | US banks only | Right after approval (if your bank supports it) | No Topstep fee |
| Prop-to-Brokerage | US only | Same day if requested by 12 PM CT | None |
- The maximum per payout is the lower of 50% of your balance and the amount in the table.
- Net amount example: if you request $500, you receive $420 after the 10% split ($50) and the $30 wire fee.
Show 7 more notes
- Winning days are set at 4:00 PM CT.
- XFA Consistency requires best day / total net profit to be 40% or less. It resets with each payout, and trades on the day you submit a request do not count toward the next cycle.
- For a limited time (started 2026-06-02, end date not announced), accounts that added a daily loss limit when buying the evaluation get double the XFA per-payout cap (50K Standard $4,000, Consistency $6,000 and so on). Adding it at XFA activation or with Back2Funded does not qualify.
- The receiving account must be in your own name. Traders outside the US submit the W-8BEN tax form.
- Payout reviews check the payout requirements, prohibited conduct, the terms and prohibited strategies. Violations can delay or deny a payout.
- After your first payout, the XFA maximum drawdown locks at $0, and your balance itself becomes the loss floor. Topstep recommends building your balance until the line locks at $0 before you request a payout.
- In the Live Funded Account, you can request up to 50% of your balance for every 5 winning days of $150 or more, with no dollar cap. Once you reach 30 winning days in Live, you can request once per day from your unlocked balance (minimum $125).

If nothing here worries you, getting started with Topstep takes 5 steps.
Topstep Payout Rules and Payout Policy: Conditions, Caps and TimingHow to start
How do you start with Topstep? 5 steps from sign-up to your first payout request
Most of the Topstep process happens on the official site and in the dashboard. Two things are worth knowing in advance so you do not get stuck: identity verification is required before your second purchase, and payment must be made with a card in your own name.
1. Create a profile on the official site
Sign up on the official Topstep site. Each person can have 1 profile, and creating more than 1 profile violates the terms. You must be 18 or older, and US citizenship is not required.
1Sign up from the top rightTopstep official homepage (Source: Topstep official site, English page, captured 2026-11-05) 2. Choose an account size and payment path, then pay
Choose a size (50K, 100K or 150K) and a path (Standard or No Activation Fee). You cannot change the path after purchase. You also decide at purchase whether to add a daily loss limit, and you cannot change that later. Pay with a Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Google Wallet or Apple Pay in your own name. Before your second purchase, identity verification is required (a photo of an original government-issued ID and a selfie).
1You need an original government ID and a cameraIdentity verification: when, what you need and steps (Source: Official help: ID verification, English page, captured 2026-11-05) 3. Take the evaluation on TopstepX
You trade the evaluation on TopstepX, the in-house platform that runs in a browser, or on Quantower. Level 1 market data is free, but you must file a CME non-professional declaration. While you hold an evaluation, you can also use a 150K practice account for free.

Which countries can use Topstep? Restricted countries list and eligibility
Topstep decides eligibility based on both citizenship and permanent residency. There are 34 countries and regions that cannot trade, and 25 more where the funded sim account is available but the live account is not (as of 2026-11-04). The lists change from time to time, and not being listed does not guarantee access. Check the official eligibility page yourself to make sure your country is not listed before you apply.
| Category | Details |
|---|---|
| Basis for eligibility | Both citizenship and permanent residency. 18 or older, US citizenship not required |
| Countries and regions that cannot trade | 34. Citizens of these countries cannot trade or receive payouts |
| Countries and regions limited to the XFA | 25. The funded sim account (XFA) is available, but the live account is not |
| Your country | As of 2026-11-04, Topstep publishes both lists. Check that your country is not on either list before you apply (not being listed is not a guarantee of access) |
| Identity verification | Required before your second purchase. A photo of an original government-issued ID and a selfie |
- Basis for eligibility
- Both citizenship and permanent residency. Eligibility is determined by US sanctions (OFAC) and partner restrictions. US citizenship is not required, and you must be 18 or older.
- Countries and regions that cannot trade
- 34 countries and regions. People whose citizenship is on this list cannot trade or receive payouts.
- Countries and regions that cannot move to a live account
- 25 countries and regions. Traders can withdraw up to $200,000 in total from funded sim accounts, and depending on performance may qualify for a Pro Account (a sim account offered in place of Live).
- Your country
- As of 2026-11-04, Topstep publishes both lists. Because the lists can change, check the official page before you apply to confirm your country is not listed.
- If your citizenship and residence differ
- Even if your citizenship is in an eligible country, you cannot use Topstep while living in an ineligible country. If your citizenship is in an ineligible country but you are a permanent resident of an eligible country, you are reviewed based on a photo ID showing permanent residency and a bank statement from that country. Trading from an ineligible country is subject to review even during a short stay.
- Identity verification
- Required before your second purchase. You photograph an original valid government-issued ID, such as a passport, driver license or national ID card, and also send a selfie. Copies or images shown on a screen are not accepted, and you may be asked to verify again at any time.
- Language support
- Under review. No dedicated support for languages other than English is listed. The first-line AI assistant, Windy, is described as replying in the language you type in, but phone support is in English only.
- Receiving payouts outside the US
- Wise is available only in China, Canada and the UK, so in other countries outside the US the main option is an international wire (Wire/SWIFT, 5 to 10 business days, $30 fee). The receiving account must be in your own name.
- Taxes
- Under review. The official Topstep sources do not describe tax treatment in individual countries. Ask a tax professional in your country how to report your income.

Topstep trading centers on its in-house TopstepX platform, which runs in a browser and includes TradingView charts. No installation is needed, and you can open it in a browser on a computer or a phone. There is no dedicated mobile app. Quantower is also available through TopstepX, but only for the evaluation and the funded sim account. Support for NinjaTrader, Tradovate and Rithmic is under review because the official help center does not list them.

- Automated trading is allowed with conditions, but Topstep does not help with setup or offer relief for malfunctions. Orders routed through a VPS, VPN or remote server are prohibited.
- In the live account, CME professional data costs $133 a month per exchange, and Topstep covers 1 exchange. For all 4 exchanges you pay $399 a month yourself. Trading commissions and platform licenses are also your cost.
- From 2026-10-01, exchange fees for MCL and MNG rose by $0.10 per side.

- Day traders who close out the same day (all positions closed by 3:10 PM CT on weekdays)
- Traders who want the smallest possible first payment (50K Standard is $49 a month)
- Traders who want to start on a browser platform with no installation (TopstepX)
- Traders who want a firm that publishes payout processing times (internal approval in 1 to 3 business days)
- Traders who want to run several accounts under the same rules (up to 5 funded sim accounts, trade copying between your own accounts allowed)
Not a fit if
- Traders who want to hold positions overnight or over the weekend (overnight and weekend holding is not allowed)
- Traders who want to reach the target with one big day (the target rises if your best day exceeds 55% of total profit)
- Traders who want to reach a live account quickly (live accounts are by risk team invitation only)
- Traders who want to enter large size right after economic data (no new equity index or metals mini positions for 5 minutes before and after CPI, FOMC and similar releases)
- Traders who only trade on familiar third-party platforms such as NinjaTrader (support is under review)
- Traders who want to lock in the evaluation cost with a one-time payment (the Topstep evaluation is a monthly subscription)

The Topstep 50K Standard is $49 a month, the lowest 50K list price among the 5 firms whose list prices we could confirm (the Lucid Trading list price is under review). However, the monthly fee is charged every month until you pass, and a $149 activation fee is added when you pass, so compare total cost based on how many months you expect to need.

No time limit to pass, and 2 payment paths to choose from
The Topstep evaluation continues every 30 days until you pass or cancel, and it is never cut off by a deadline. You can choose Standard, with a lower monthly fee and $149 due when you pass, or No Activation Fee, with a higher monthly fee and a $0 activation fee.

The maximum drawdown locks at the starting balance, and payout times are published
The Topstep maximum drawdown rises on an end-of-day basis and locks once it reaches the starting balance. Payout times are stated officially: 1 to 3 business days for internal approval and 5 to 10 business days for an international wire. The predecessor company was founded in 2010.

What to know before choosing Topstep
Because it is a monthly subscription, the cost grows the longer you take to pass
Passing the Topstep 50K Standard in 3 months costs $296 in total (monthly fees plus the activation fee). Costs grow differently than at firms with one-time fees, so compare based on how many months you expect to need.

No holding past the session close, and limits around economic data
At Topstep you must close all positions by 3:10 PM CT on weekdays, and you cannot open new equity index or metals mini positions for 5 minutes before and after CPI, FOMC, NFP and PPI. Depending on your time zone, the close-out time can fall at an inconvenient hour, so check how it fits your daily schedule.

Live accounts are invitation-only, and outside the US payouts are mainly by international wire
You can move to a Topstep live account only at the risk team's discretion. Wise is limited to China, Canada and the UK, so elsewhere outside the US, payouts are mainly by international wire (5 to 10 business days, $30 fee). Support for third-party platforms such as NinjaTrader is also under review.

Common breaches
Why do traders fail at Topstep? 13 pitfalls from the official rules
The reasons you can lose a Topstep evaluation or funded sim account are all written in the official rules. Below are the ones that the wording of the rules suggests are easy to run into, each split into the official rule and how to avoid it. All of them can be prepared for in advance, so read through them once before you start trading.
Touching the maximum drawdown with an open loss
Official rule:The Topstep maximum drawdown is monitored in real time, including intraday open profit and loss. Even a temporary open loss before you close the trade ends the evaluation (you lose eligibility to pass) or closes the funded sim account the moment it touches the line. There are no MLL adjustments or exceptions.
How to avoid it:Before every trade, check how many dollars you have left before the current line, and place your stop order inside the line. A line raised at the close does not come back down, so remember that your room is smallest on the day after a winning day.
Source: Official help: Max drawdown
Holding a position after 3:10 PM CT
Official rule:On weekdays you must close all positions by 3:10 PM CT. After 3:08 PM CT, Topstep risk management starts closing positions, and you cannot hold positions overnight or over the weekend.
How to avoid it:Convert the close-out time to your local time and set your own exit time with room to spare. Note that the local time can shift by 1 hour when US daylight saving time starts or ends.
Opening new mini positions within 5 minutes of economic data
Official rule:For 5 minutes before and 5 minutes after CPI, the FOMC statement and press conference, NFP and PPI, you cannot open new equity index or metals mini positions in sim accounts. Micros are limited to 3 contracts on 50K, 6 on 100K and 9 on 150K.
How to avoid it:Note the release times for the week in your local time in advance. Place no new orders in the 5 minutes before and after, and only manage the positions you already have.
Source: Official help: Product limits
Exceeding the maximum position size
Official rule:The evaluation maximum position is 5 minis or 50 micros on 50K, 10 or 100 on 100K and 15 or 150 on 150K. In the funded sim account, the limit is set by the scaling plan based on your balance and does not increase during a session. Exceeding it for 10 seconds or more is subject to review.
How to avoid it:Check the contract count on the order screen before you place an order. If you mix minis and micros, count 10 micros as 1 mini. In the funded sim account, check the day's limit before you start. Source: Official help: Combine rules / Official help: ScalingSources for this section (2)
Missing the product-specific limits on crude oil and gold
Official rule:Volatile products have separate limits. Currently CL, QM, RB, HO and GC are limited to 3 contracts on 50K, 6 on 100K and 9 on 150K, MCL and MGC to 30, 60 and 90, and SI, HG and PL to 0.
How to avoid it:Do not size these the same way as equity indexes. Check the limit for the product on the official list before you order. The limits can change, so review them before you start trading.
Source: Official help: Product limits
Placing orders through a VPS, VPN or remote server
Official rule:Topstep prohibits orders routed through a VPS, VPN or remote server, the use of VPNs, proxies or TOR, and any attempt to get around geographic or technical restrictions.
How to avoid it:Trade from your own device on a normal connection, such as your home internet. If you use automated trading, do not run it on a VPS. Source: Official help: Combine rules / Official help: Prohibited conductSources for this section (2)
Taking opposite positions across your own accounts (hedging)
Official rule:Holding opposite positions in the same or correlated products across your own accounts is prohibited (for example, MES and ES, or MNQ and NQ). Repeated violations can lead to the Focused Trader Program, a corrective program that closes all accounts.
How to avoid it:If you hold several accounts, trade only in the same direction in all of them, or send the same orders with the trade copier. Source: Official help: Hedging / Official help: Prohibited conduct / Official help: Focused TraderSources for this section (3)
Mistaking the consistency rule for a failure condition
Official rule:Exceeding the 55% consistency target in the evaluation does not fail you. Instead, the profit target rises to best day / 0.55. In XFA Consistency, on the other hand, consistency of 40% or less is a payout requirement.
How to avoid it:In the evaluation, keeping daily profit under the guideline (under $1,650 on 50K) keeps the target from rising. If you choose XFA Consistency, track the 40% separately as a payout requirement.
Source: Official help: Consistency
Not using a funded sim account for 30 days or more
Official rule:Funded sim accounts and live accounts may be closed after more than 30 days without trading, and there is no way to put them on hold.
How to avoid it:Even if you take a break, plan to trade at least once within every 30 days. Source: Official help: XFA / Official help: Live fundedSources for this section (2)
Creating a second profile
Official rule:Topstep allows 1 profile per person, and multiple profiles violate the terms. A new profile created after a ban is closed immediately with no refund.
How to avoid it:Do not register separately under a family member's name. When you want more accounts, buy them within the same profile. Source: Official help: Combine rules / Official help: ArticleSources for this section (2)
Holding positions near the price limit
Official rule:Holding positions within 2% of the price limit is prohibited conduct.
How to avoid it:When the market moves sharply toward a price limit, do not open new positions, and reduce existing positions early.
Trading in ways that exploit sim fills
Official rule:Trading that departs from real market conditions is a prohibited strategy, such as hundreds of high-speed trades, trades aimed at abnormal fills on gaps, extremely tight bracket orders, and entering major data releases at maximum size.
How to avoid it:Set your order count and size on the assumption that they would fill the same way in the real market. Avoid entering at full size during data releases.
Coordinating trades with others or trading for others
Official rule:Prohibited conduct includes coordinated trading with other people, trading someone else's account, exploiting price displays or data delays, and using external or delayed data. Consequences include warnings, removal of trading days, resets, permanent closure and delayed or denied payouts.
How to avoid it:Operate your account yourself and do not share your login details. Use the TopstepX data feed.
Every one of these failure reasons is written in the official Topstep rules. Next, look at the facts about the company that you can confirm from official sources.

FAQ
Topstep FAQ
What is Topstep?
Topstep is a futures prop firm headquartered in Chicago, USA. Its predecessor, Patak Trading Partners, was founded in 2010, and the company was renamed Topstep in 2020. It pays traders who pass the evaluation (Trading Combine) 90% of profits based on their results in funded sim accounts. It is operated by Topstep LLC and its affiliates, and the group also includes ProjectX Trading LLC, which develops TopstepX, and Topstep Brokerage LLC, an introducing broker and NFA member.
What are Topstep reviews like?
This page gives you facts you can confirm from official sources rather than review scores or star ratings. Counting its predecessor, Topstep has operated since 2010, and its official site shows $1.5B+ paid in total and 7,000+ traders paid every week (both are Topstep's own figures). On the other hand, some points do not suit everyone: the evaluation is a monthly subscription that costs money until you pass, you cannot hold positions past the session close, and live accounts are invitation-only. The cautions are summarized in "Who is Topstep a good fit for" and "Why do traders fail at Topstep".
Which countries can use Topstep?
As of 2026-11-04, Topstep publishes a list of countries that cannot trade (34 countries and regions) and a list of countries that cannot move to a live account (25 countries and regions). Eligibility is based on both citizenship and permanent residency, and the lists change from time to time, so not being listed is not a guarantee of access. Check the official eligibility page to confirm your country is not listed before you apply.
What languages does Topstep support?
Under review. The official Topstep help center lists no dedicated support for languages other than English. The first-line AI assistant, Windy, is described as replying in the language you type in, but phone support (888-407-1611, Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM CT) is in English only. Email help@topstep.com and chat are also available.
How much does Topstep cost?
The Topstep evaluation starts at $49 a month for a 50K account (Standard, before tax). Standard is $99 for 100K and $199 for 150K, with a $149 activation fee when you pass. No Activation Fee, with a $0 activation fee, is $95 for 50K, $149 for 100K and $229 for 150K. A reset costs the same as the monthly fee.
Which is cheaper at Topstep, Standard or No Activation Fee?
It depends on how many months you take to pass. On a 50K account, No Activation Fee is cheaper if you pass within 3 months ($285 vs $296 at 3 months), and Standard is cheaper if it takes 4 months or more. On 100K they are almost equal at 3 months, and on 150K at 5 months. You cannot change the path after purchase, so check the total cost table in the pricing section (an estimate that excludes tax and resets) before you choose.
What are the Topstep Trading Combine rules?
On a 50K account, you pass when you reach the $3,000 profit target without touching the $2,000 maximum drawdown and trade at least 2 days. 100K has a $6,000 target and a $3,000 maximum drawdown, and 150K has $9,000 and $4,500. The maximum position on 50K is 5 minis or 50 micros, and you must close all positions by 3:10 PM CT on weekdays.
What is the Topstep consistency rule?
In the evaluation, it requires your best day to be 55% or less of total profit. Exceeding it does not fail you; the profit target rises to best day / 0.55. On a 50K account, keeping daily profit under $1,650 keeps the target at $3,000. The rule changed from the earlier "50% with a buffer" to the current 55% with no buffer. In the funded sim account, XFA Consistency has a separate payout requirement of 40% or less.
How fast can you pass the Topstep Combine?
In as few as 2 trading days. You cannot pass Topstep in a single day. Because of the consistency rule, passing a 50K account in 2 days requires building profit within the guideline on both days. There is no time limit to pass, so there is no need to rush.
What is the Topstep pass rate?
Under review. Results for 2025 were once shown on the official Topstep home page, but we could not confirm where they are currently published, so this page does not show a figure. We will add it with the source once we can confirm it.
What is the difference between the Topstep evaluation, funded sim account and live account?
The evaluation (Trading Combine) is a sim account where you work toward passing. The funded sim account (XFA) is a sim account where you can withdraw profits after passing. The live account (Live Funded Account) trades real capital. Live accounts are by risk team invitation only, and when you move up, all of your funded sim accounts are closed. The live account starts with 20% of the transferred amount, and the remaining 80% is released in 25% steps each time you hit a target.
When and under what conditions can you get a Topstep payout?
On XFA Standard, you can request a payout once you have 5 winning days of $150 or more (not necessarily in a row). On XFA Consistency, the requirement is 3 trading days and consistency of 40% or less. You submit requests from the dashboard during CME trading hours, and internal approval takes 1 to 3 business days. The minimum payout is $125.
What is the Topstep payout cap per request?
On a 50K account, XFA Standard allows up to $2,000 per payout and XFA Consistency up to $3,000, or 50% of your balance if that is lower. 100K allows $3,000 and $4,000, and 150K allows $5,000 and $6,000. For a limited time from 2026-06-02, accounts that added a daily loss limit when buying the evaluation get double these caps (end date not announced).
How do traders outside the US receive Topstep payouts? Can I use Wise?
Outside the US, the main option is an international wire (Wire/SWIFT), which takes 5 to 10 business days with a $30 fee. As of 2026-11-04, Wise is available only in China, Canada and the UK. The receiving account must be in your own name, and traders outside the US submit the W-8BEN. For example, if you request $500, you receive $420 after the 10% split and the $30 fee.
What is the Topstep profit split?
90% to the trader and 10% to Topstep. It is the same on XFA Standard and XFA Consistency. Only traders who moved to the new dashboard before 2026-01-12 get 100% on the first $10,000 of lifetime profit.
What happens if you hit the Topstep maximum drawdown?
In the evaluation you lose eligibility to pass, but the subscription continues and you can still place practice trades. You get 1 reset credit at each renewal, and a reset moves your next billing date 30 days later. If it happens in a funded sim account, the account is closed, but before your first payout you can reactivate it within 30 calendar days with Back2Funded ($599 for 50K).
Can you get a refund or cancel a Topstep evaluation?
You can cancel at any time, but refunds are generally not available. The 3 exceptions are: up to 1 monthly fee within 14 calendar days of your first Combine purchase if you have not passed (first time only); a renewal you forgot to cancel, if you have not traded, it is within 28 days of the charge, and that reset credit is unused; and buying the wrong size, if it is within 28 days and you have not traded (subject to review). Resets, activation fees and Back2Funded are not refunded.
Can you trade FX at Topstep?
Spot FX is not available. CME FX futures (6A, 6B, 6C, 6E, 6J, 6S, M6E and others) are available. CME and CBOT equity indexes, NYMEX energy, CBOT grains and interest rates, COMEX metals and more are also covered.
Which trading platforms can you use at Topstep?
The main platform is the in-house TopstepX (runs in a browser, with TradingView charts), and Quantower is also available for the evaluation and funded sim account. There is no mobile app; you use a mobile browser. NinjaTrader, Tradovate and Rithmic are not listed as supported in the official help center and are under review.
Can you hold positions overnight or over the weekend at Topstep?
No. On weekdays you must close everything by 3:10 PM CT, and after 3:08 PM CT risk management starts closing positions. Trading reopens at 5:00 PM CT.
Is automated trading allowed at Topstep?
Yes, with conditions. However, Topstep does not help with setup or offer relief for malfunctions, and orders routed through a VPS, VPN or remote server are prohibited. The TopstepX API costs $29 a month and works only in sim, so it is not available in the live account.
What reviews does Topstep run on traders?
Topstep runs 2 kinds of review. The first is the payout review, which checks the payout requirements, prohibited conduct, the terms and prohibited strategies; internal approval takes 1 to 3 business days. The second is the review for moving up to a live account, where the risk team considers consistency, risk management, position size, products, stop use, payout history and more before sending an invitation. You cannot decline the move and keep your funded sim accounts.
What is Topstep Brokerage?
Topstep Brokerage LLC is a Topstep group company launched in 2026. It is an introducing broker and a member of the NFA (National Futures Association), with NFA ID 0567079. It is a separate company from TopstepTrader, LLC, which runs the evaluation and funded sim accounts. Details of the service rollout are under review.
What are the downsides of Topstep?
The official rules point to 4 main cautions. The evaluation is a monthly subscription, so the cost grows the longer you take to pass. You cannot hold positions past the session close, and depending on your time zone the close-out time can fall at an inconvenient hour. You cannot open new equity index or metals mini positions for 5 minutes before and after economic data. Live accounts are invitation-only, and outside the US payouts are mainly by international wire ($30 fee).
Do you fail if you hit the Topstep daily loss limit (DLL)?
No. The daily loss limit in the evaluation and funded sim account is optional, and hitting it only stops trading for the day. You can resume at the next session at 5:00 PM CT. A loss limit added at purchase cannot be changed later and carries over to the funded sim account. In the live account, however, a daily loss limit is mandatory.
How many Topstep accounts can you have?
There is no limit on how many evaluations (Trading Combines) you can hold or buy. After you pass, you can hold up to 5 funded sim accounts at a time, mixing sizes and XFA Standard and XFA Consistency. Any Combine you pass while holding 5 is put on hold. You can hold only 1 live account at a time, and each person can have 1 profile.
When is Topstep identity verification required, and what do you need?
It is required before your second purchase. You photograph an original valid government-issued ID, such as a passport, driver license or national ID card, and also send a selfie. Copies or images shown on a screen are not accepted. Verification is done with third-party verification software, and you may be asked to verify again at any time afterward.
Can you practice at Topstep?
Yes. While you hold an active evaluation, you can use a 150K practice account (up to 15 contracts) for free, and resets are free too. Even after hitting the maximum drawdown in an evaluation, you can place practice trades as long as the subscription continues.
What is Topstep Labs?
Topstep Labs offers limited-time or experimental products from Topstep. For example, the $50K Static Trading Combine is a one-time payment of $149, valid for 90 days, with a $4,000 profit target and a maximum drawdown fixed at $2,000. Each product is available in limited quantities and differs from the standard evaluation, so check the official description before you buy. Prices for some products are under review.
Can you pay for Topstep with PayPal?
No. Topstep accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Google Wallet and Apple Pay, and the card must be in your own name. Prepaid cards and gift cards may not work. Prices exclude tax, and local VAT or similar taxes may be added at checkout.
Do you pay taxes on Topstep profits?
Under review. The official Topstep sources do not describe tax treatment in individual countries. What Topstep asks of traders outside the US is the W-8BEN form. Ask a tax professional in your country how to report your income.
Which countries can use Topstep?
Of these, Nigeria (no trading or payouts) is on Topstep's official restricted list (checked 2026-11-04). Based on citizenship and permanent residence. 34 countries and regions cannot trade; 25 can use the XFA but not Live. Not being listed is not a guarantee of eligibility, so check the official list before you buy.
