Futures prop firm platforms: how Rithmic, CQG, Tradovate, and NinjaTrader fit together, and CME non-professional status
- Futures prop trading tools have 2 layers: a connection that carries orders and market data (Rithmic, CQG, Tradovate, and others) and a front end that runs on top of it (NinjaTrader, TradingView, Quantower, and others). The connection decides which front ends you can use (firm help pages checked 2026-11-04).
- To use CME market data at the individual rate, you must meet the non-professional conditions and sign a data agreement. CME's conditions include being an individual or small business entity, not being an exchange member or registered investment professional, and using the data only to manage your own assets.
- Automated trading and copy trading are treated differently at the 6 firms. Apex Trader Funding and Take Profit Trader ban automated trading, and the other 4 allow it with conditions. Many firms state that copy trading is allowed only between your own accounts.
What is the difference between a connection and a trading platform?
When you open a futures prop firm account, you are asked to choose things like "Rithmic or Tradovate" and "Can I use NinjaTrader?" The many names are confusing because tools with different roles are all called a "platform."
Sorted out, trading tools fall into 2 layers.
- Connection (data and order routing): delivers exchange market data and sends orders to the exchange (or, for prop sim accounts, to a simulated environment). Rithmic, CQG, Tradovate, and others
- Front end (charting and order entry software): connects to a connection so you can view charts and place orders. NinjaTrader, TradingView, Quantower, Sierra Chart, and others
A front end can only connect to the connections it supports. For example, Lucid Trading's help center lists NinjaTrader, Tradovate, and TradingView on the CQG side, and Quantower, MotiveWave, Sierra Chart, Bookmap, ATAS, R|Trader Pro, and others on the Rithmic side. The front end you want decides the connection you choose.
Some prop firms have their own front end. Topstep offers its own TopstepX (browser-based, with TradingView charts built in). Apex Trader Funding and Tradeify let you choose WealthCharts as one of the connections.
Take Profit Trader's help center explains that orders, including on the PRO funded account, are not sent to the exchange and are processed inside the data provider's (Rithmic, Tradovate) simulation. Prop evaluations and many funded accounts are simulated accounts of this kind.

What are Rithmic, CQG, Tradovate, and NinjaTrader?
We checked the 4 names that come up most often against each company's official site.
| Name | Role | Official site description (summary) |
|---|---|---|
| Rithmic | Connection | Provider of direct market access execution software. Handles market data delivery, server-side orders, and pre- and post-trade risk management, and connects to more than a dozen front ends |
| CQG | Connection and front end | Technology company for traders, brokers, and exchanges. Lists 85 market data sources and 45 exchanges, and has its own trading software, CQG One |
| Tradovate | Front end and futures broker | Both a futures trading platform and a futures broker. Apps for Mac, PC, iPad, Android, and iPhone. A NinjaTrader Group company |
| NinjaTrader | Front end and futures broker | Offers desktop, web, and mobile trading platforms, plus futures brokerage |
In prop firm help pages, Tradovate is often treated as "CQG-based." Take Profit Trader describes its data connections as "CQG (via Tradovate) or Rithmic." In other words, choosing a Tradovate account runs on CQG data and lets you use front ends such as Tradovate, NinjaTrader, and TradingView.
According to the disclosure on Tradovate's official site, Tradovate and NinjaTrader are both NinjaTrader Group companies. Tradovate's site notes that one login works for both platforms.
TradingView is a charting service that connects to prop accounts through a connection. Apex Trader Funding's help center says it works with the Tradovate connection, and Tradeify's help center says data on the free plan is delayed by about 5 seconds, with paid plans from $12.95 a month.

What is CME non-professional status? The conditions, and what happens if you do not sign
To display and use CME market data, you must register as a data user. CME Group's information license document (Schedule 5, January 2026 version) divides users into "professional" and "non-professional" and sets the conditions for the non-professional rate.
Non-professional conditions in CME's document
A non-professional user must meet all of the following (summary of Schedule 5, section 8.1).
- Has a futures trading account
- Is an individual or a small business entity
- Is not a member of any exchange and does not own or lease a membership
- Is not registered with an exchange or financial regulator as a professional trader or investment adviser
- Does not trade on behalf of an institution in the securities, banking, investment, or other financial business
- Uses no more than 2 order entry devices to access the information
Section 8.2 also requires that the data be used only for your personal use and to manage your own assets, and not to manage anyone else's.
Declaring status at prop firms
Help pages at 4 of the 6 firms mention the non-professional declaration or data agreement.
- Topstep: the CME non-professional declaration is required
- Tradeify: you must sign the Non-Professional Agreement at first login. If you do not, you may be charged the professional rate of $300 a month
- Take Profit Trader: for Test and PRO, you sign the data agreement as a non-professional (for both CQG and Rithmic)
- My Funded Futures: you sign and activate the market data agreement at your first Tradovate login
How Apex Trader Funding and Lucid Trading handle the non-professional declaration is under review in their official materials. On the declaration screen, if even one of CME's conditions above does not apply to you, you are treated as a professional. Answer accurately for your situation, especially "Do you work at a financial institution and trade as part of that job?" and "Are you registered as an investment adviser or similar?"
The non-professional conditions above summarize CME's document. Check CME Group and each data provider for the official conditions and the latest version.

How much is market data? Level 1 and Level 2 (depth of market) fees
Prop firm help pages treat basic market data (Level 1) separately from depth-of-book data (Level 2, also called DOM). At the firms where costs were confirmed, Level 1 was included and Level 2 cost extra.
| Firm | Level 1 | Level 2 and others |
|---|---|---|
| Apex Trader Funding | Included in the evaluation fee | Paid by you. Tradovate CME Bundle L2 is $48 a month |
| Lucid Trading | Under review | Under review |
| My Funded Futures | Under review for sim accounts | On Live accounts, the trader pays for professional data subscriptions |
| Take Profit Trader | No separate charge mentioned | Terms state that the firm pays data costs to third parties |
| Topstep | Free (4 exchanges) | $38 a month. Billed on the 28th of each month, no proration or refunds |
| Tradeify | CME Level 1 is free | Level 2 and EUREX are paid add-ons on Tradovate only (price under review) |
Apex Trader Funding's help center notes that canceling extra data also differs by connection. Extra data bought through Rithmic expires at month end and does not auto-renew, while Tradovate and WealthCharts are canceled on their side.
At some firms, data handling changes when you move from a funded account to a real-money (Live) account. Apex Trader Funding writes that professional data costs about $150 a month on Live, and the firm covers 1 main data feed. My Funded Futures says CME professional data, commissions, and license costs on Live accounts are deducted from the account balance.

Can you use automated trading or copy trading? 6 firms compared
Many front ends offer automated trading (strategies or bots) and copy trading, which sends one account's orders to other accounts. Whether you can use them depends on the prop firm's rules, not the tool.
| Firm | Automated trading | Copy trading |
|---|---|---|
| Apex Trader Funding | Not allowed | Allowed between funded accounts (PA) in your own name, same direction only |
| Lucid Trading | Allowed (as long as you follow the rules; malfunctions are your responsibility). HFT is banned | Allowed |
| My Funded Futures | Allowed if built on your own settings. Not allowed if aimed at exploiting favorable sim fills | Allowed on all account types. Copying with other traders is banned |
| Take Profit Trader | Banned on all accounts | Only between accounts you own, using approved tools |
| Topstep | Allowed with conditions. Orders via VPS or VPN are banned | Allowed between your own accounts (TopstepX built-in copier) |
| Tradeify | Allowed with conditions (owned only by you, not shared with others, not HFT, and so on) | Only between your own accounts, with all accounts in the same direction |
Topstep's TopstepX has an API for automated trading (provided by ProjectX, $29 a month), but it is for the sim environment and cannot be used on real-money accounts. Tradeify says the Tradovate API works only on Live Funded accounts, not on evaluations or sim funded accounts.
With copy trading, opposite positions across accounts count as a hedging violation. Tradeify states that opposite-direction settings violate its hedging rule. Take Profit Trader also treats opposite positions as a violation even when caused by copying. Some firms ban copying with other people's accounts or sharing a computer or other device.

What to check before choosing your trading platform
Here is everything above as a checklist in the order to follow before you buy an account.
- Decide which front end you want to use (NinjaTrader, TradingView, Quantower, and so on)
- Check which connections (Rithmic, CQG, Tradovate) that front end supports
- Check whether your computer is Windows or Mac (there is guidance that Rithmic does not support Mac)
- Check that the firm you buy from supports that connection and front end, and whether you can change it later
- Check whether you need extra data such as Level 2, and what it costs
- If you plan to use automated trading or copy trading, check that the firm's rules allow it
- At first login, answer the data agreement accurately against CME's non-professional conditions
At some firms, the connection also changes commissions or drawdown handling. For example, Apex Trader Funding writes that during the evaluation, the drawdown locks at the profit target balance on Rithmic and WealthCharts but does not lock on Tradovate. When you choose a tool, look at rule differences like these, not just ease of use.
